Oral habits can be defined as “tendency towards an act that has become repeated performance, i.e fixed consistent and easy to perform & almost automatic. Oral habits are learned patterns of muscle contraction and have a very complex nature. 

There are various types of oral habits such as useful, non-useful , harmful, non-harmful, compulsive, non-complusive and various others types that you can find in this document.

From the view point of Pedodontics, the most important and usual habits found in children are Thumb-sucking, Mouth-breathing, Tongue thrusting, Lip habit and some Self-injurious habit. These all are well explained with their clinical features, etiology and management or treatment of the same.  

These habits can produce destructive effects on the dentoalveolar structures so its very important to diagnose early and treat them. Parental awareness about the adverse oral habits is also another factor which needs to be looked into, negligence of the parents can become a cause to the dentofacial anomalies in the children.
