Pulpotomy and Pulpectomy are two basic and very important procedures in dentistry. PULPOTOMY can be defined as
“The complete removal of coronal portion of dental pulp by placement of suitable dressing or medicament that will promote healing and preserve the vitality of the tooth” while on the other hand PULPECTOMY can be defined as “
The removal of roof and contents of pulp chamber in order to gain access into the root canal which are debrided, enlarged and disinfected, later on canals are filled with restorable material.”
Pulpotomy can be referred to as baby root canal. Pulpotomy is done on a live tooth, Pulpectomies and root canals are both done on teeth that are no longer vital. These two procedures are the preferred treatments for both symptomatic irreversible pulpitis and symptomatic apical periodontitis, in children.
It is important to be able to distinguish which treatment is needed because it can have a profound impact on the maturation of the tooth.
